This type is confined to small patches (this is one of the biggest) on the edges of this long narrow valley bottom wetland. Towards upland is a narrow zone of deciduous/evergreen swamp forest. Further out in the wetland is the matrix Carex type.;"Moat" community on edge of extensive herb shrub open wetland complex. Seepage from slopes above creates this poor fen (bog) vegetation with dominance by Eriophorum virginicum and Rhynchospora alba over heavy Sphagnum and sundew. Small pitch pine are becoming established, but within the thick of this bog they appear stunted. A few snags in plot indicates past paludification maybe because of a beaver dam downstream.
Representativeness
Plot covers entire patch of this community type. This bog-like type is similar to to more extensive stands at high elevations in the Allegheny Mountains.
